Attorney probed: The Cook County public defender’s office said Friday it is investigating whether public defender Jeanne Bishop acted improperly in trying to represent Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg at a hearing on his domestic battery charge. Circuit Judge Earl Hoffenberg asked Bishop to withdraw Thursday, saying public defenders only represent the indigent.

Fitness in doubt: The attorney for Michael Alfonso, the Wheaton man accused of killing two ex-girlfriends, told DuPage Judge Kathryn Creswell on Friday that his client may be mentally unfit for trial. Creswell set a fitness hearing for Nov. 2.

Metra acts: Metra board members agreed Friday to make the bikes-on-trains program permanent, to rename Randolph Street Station Millennium Station and to conduct public hearings on a proposed 5 percent fare increase.

2 wanted: Arrest warrants have been issued for Jose G. Gutierrez-Covarubius, 19, and Eduardo Rodriguez, 16, in the beating death last month of Fernando Diaz Jr., 21, of Schaumburg, Kane County sheriff’s police said Friday. Two others were charged earlier with murder.
