PROJECT: 21-by-20-foot dining room in a Bannockburn home

PROJECT GENIUS: Barbara Posa, interior designer with Toms-Price Home Furnishings, 374 Old Orchard Center, Skokie, 847-675-9400, ext. 1588

THE CHALLENGE: “There are 21 of us” during the holidays, says the homeowner, ticking off her list of children, grandchildren, other family members and friends. “I wanted everybody in one room.”

THE SOLUTION: Posa created three distinct seating areas. The traditional dining table complements the home’s European style and seats up to 12 adults when fully extended to 12 feet. At each window is a built-in banquette — something the homeowner had in mind. With each banquette is a tile-top table and two chairs, so each “window seat” accommodates four children comfortably, six in a pinch. When there’s less of a crowd, the homeowner uses the main dining table for seating and serves coffee and dessert from the little round tables.

PROJECT COST AND SOURCES: About $40,000 for furniture, light fixtures, window treatments, area rug. Most of the furnishings are from Toms-Price. The banquette was built for about $3,000, not including upholstery. The curtains and window cornices were made by Nettie’s Draperies, 10527 S. Ridgeland Ave., Chicago Ridge, 708-424-4800. The chandelier and sconces are from Idlewood Electric Supply, 114 Skokie Valley Rd., Highland Park, 847-831-3600.
