King Kong is getting supersized. The movie, that is–not the great ape.
Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated remake will clock in at a monster 3 hours (up from an initial 1 1/2 hours), with extra digital effects swelling the budget from $175 million to $207 million. But Universal execs, who saw a sneak peak of the movie, aren’t too worried about the extra minutes or expense.
“This is a masterpiece,” chairwoman Stacey Snider told the New York Times. “I can’t wait to unveil it.”
Universal even offered to pick up half of the $32 million in cost overruns. But director Jackson insisted on covering the difference himself.
The movie, which stars Naomi Watts and Jack Black, swings into theaters Dec. 14. Jackson’s “making-of” DVD hits stores the day before.
