The White Sox on Friday will drive in a winding motorcade through the neighborhoods where some of their fans live, with the trip ending in a ticker-tape parade in the Loop and a rally at Wacker Drive and LaSalle Street.
Plans for the festivities were unveiled by a bleary-eyed, but happy Mayor Daley, with additional details provided later Thursday at a City Hall news conference.
Sox players, coaches and front-office personnel and their families will board a fleet of double-decker buses and trolleys at U.S. Cellular Field, departing at 11:15 a.m., officials said. The motorcade will go through Bridgeport, Bronzeville, Chinatown, Pilsen, Greektown and the South Loop, finally making its way to LaSalle Street and Jackson Boulevard.
From there, the procession will move north on LaSalle in a ticker-tape parade.
A temporary stage at Wacker and LaSalle will be the site of the rally. At least two giant TV screens will be set up along LaSalle so fans who can’t get close to the stage can see what is happening, said James Law, the city’s special events director.
Players are expected to speak, and so are Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and Daley, a lifelong Sox fan.
Law said the city was “looking into” making former Journey lead singer Steve Perry a part of Friday’s festivities since Journey’s song “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” became the Sox’s unofficial anthem.
