After Philadelphia beat San Diego 20-17, Eagles coach Andy Reid said he had to do a better job of balancing passing and running plays. “I don’t forget about [running plays],” he said. “I normally go with what’s working.” In that game, the Eagles rushed 14 times and attempted 54 passes. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, NFL players ran for 100 yards or more in a game 66 times through the first seven weeks last season. This season that number is 51. Total rushing yards have dropped from 23,417 to 22,750 in that span. “[Defenses] take away the running game, and they do it with an extra guy up there,” Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore said. “When you’re one on one outside, that’s what you want to take advantage of.”
