Change is good
I love the changes you have made to the Good Eating section, especially the training articles (“Prep School”), [such as] how to chop fruits and vegetables. I don’t really have enough time to take a class and this is a great substitute.
I also enjoy the articles about the ethnic cooks (“Weaving Flavors”). I was so excited to see the article with the liver dumpling recipe on the cover (“A Taste of Slovenia,” June 15). My family has eaten liver dumpling soup in the fall all my life, and they are getting harder and harder to find. Now I have a starting point and can adjust it as I would like. My mother is German and so many things were never written. I try to make a recipe from what she does.
The only thing I would add would be some light recipes from time to time.

Ghoulish fun
I want to thank you for the ghoulish Transylvanian ghoulash recipe (Dinner Tonight!, Oct. 26). My dad made the dish for my friends and me and we had a blast with all the spooky things he made.

Sweet surprise
Your potato story was interesting (“One Potato, Two Potato . . . ,” Nov. 2), but you didn’t even get to sweet potatoes! My favorite.
Do you know all those chartreuse vines planted in flower boxes and planters all over town? I dug mine up the other day and had HUGE sweet potatoes. I searched online for Ipomoea “Margarite” and the sources told me it was edible; boiled, with some butter and salt, it was sort of a cross between a sweet potato and a potato.
So, all over Chicagoland, there are sweet potatoes in the dirt that most are completely unaware of. The word needs to get out that we’re missing out on a new source of food!
