Former President Ronald Reagan was master of the one-liner.

One such gem was his glib assessment that big government was more of a problem than a solution.

He proceeded to preside over the largest federal government and deficit ever.

The Bush regime has continued this double-faced posture.

George W. railed against the big, bad federal government yet his party spent more than $200 million to retain him at its helm.

The federal government has grown markedly in size and deficit under Bush.

One congressman vowed to shrink the federal government to a size that can be drowned in a bathtub.

Playing off the classic shark movie one-liner, “We’re gonna need a bigger bathtub.”

But relax folks.

Jaws is not swimming in the Potomac.

Big government is not inherently bad.

American people are not willing to revert to a post-revolutionary Articles of Confederation scenario or a states’ rights confederacy.

We want and need some services that only a strong federal government can provide.

Big government is here to stay.

The task is to keep it responsive to our needs but not necessarily to all our wants.
