On Iraq, there were exiles who were willing to say whatever it would take to get the U.S. to depose Saddam Hussein. But as you documented in your editorial on Nov. 20, there were reasons to take seriously the danger Hussein might pose, so threatening force to return weapons inspectors to Iraq was good policy.

Once weapons inspectors were searching Iraq and finding no dangerous weapons programs, however, the justification for war was undone. At that point, President Bush should not have pushed the U.S. to go to war.
