Each week we ask Bag Boy to give us footnotes on the key details from Sunday’s game. Here’s what came out from behind the brown bag.
Fact: This is the Bears’ first seven-game winning streak since 1986.
Footnote: Quick comparison: In 1986, we also had a young QB who wore No. 18 and was asked to not do too much. Hey, just for fun, let’s sign Doug Flutie again and see what trouble ensues!
Fact: The Bears kept Tampa Bay out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.
Footnote: I am starting to hear talk of a Super Bowl around here. That’s silly, but if the Buc are supposed to be the NFC’s elite, I’m going to Detroit with or without the Bears. I know not what that means.
Fact: Defensive tackle Tommie Harris fell on Simms’ fumble at the Bucs 1 on Tampa Bay’s third offensive play of the day, setting up Orton’s TD pass on the next play.
Footnote: Chris Simms looks like Jon Gruden. He also looks like his dad, Phil Simms. He also kind of looks like Jake Busey, whose father is Gary Busey. Phil Simms looks nothing like Gary Busey. Weird. Really weird.
Fact: Tampa Bay’s Matt Bryant missed a potential game-tying 29-yard field goal attempt with 2:47 to go.
Footnote: We’re 8-3, man, so the last thing I want to do is complain. But when you win because the other guys missed a chippy, you feel more lucky than good. You get over it and watch the doubleheader. Packers-Eagles. Blagh!
Fact: Rookie Kyle Orton went 14-for-28 for 134 yards, one TD and one interception. Robbie Gould kicked field goals of 25 and 36 yards.
Footnote: We call this “managing the game.” It’s also called “Let’s punt the ball and see if our defense can score.”
Fact: Alex Brown had two sacks, his third forced fumble in two weeks, and he batted down three passes in the backfield and broke up a pass downfield.
Footnote: Brown is simply having one of the most incredible seasons ever. I wonder, though, if he’d like to line up at tight end too.
Fact: The Bucs had a 50-yard scoring drive capped by Mike Alstott’s 2-yard TD run–the first touchdown against Chicago in 13 quarters.
Footnote: Alstott is from Joliet, where they film “Prison Break.” They also filmed parts of “Rudy” and “The Blues Brothers” there. Anyway, one touchdown in 13 quarters. I think we’re getting a little sloppy on D.
