The Fall have been around since the late ’70s, during which time their influence has been reflected in the music of Pavement and Sonic Youth. But their legacy means less than the next gig to lead singer and sole constant member Mark E. Smith; he intentionally recruits younger musicians who don’t know much about the band’s history, the better to keep things fresh. The group’s latest line-up eschews the jagged experimentation and electronic beats of earlier incarnations in favor of crisp, melodic backing that gives Smith a steady platform from which to issue invigorating, acid-tongued rants.
