Street cred

Ald. Burton Natarus (42nd) wants to clamp down on street musicians with a new ordinance that would set noise limits, ban them from parts of downtown and require a $150 permit. So RedEye asks: Are street performers a novelty or a nuisance?

“Chicago has traditionally been a musical town, and the music comes from the street. Why would you want to take that away?”

Ward Powell [50, South Side]

“I think they’re a lot of fun–it gives a little flavor to the city.”

Nick Flip [23, Lakeview]

“I’m from New Orleans, so it’s part of culture, part of life. Some people have certain talents, including standing still for a long time. Why not use them?”

Sheena Williams [21, Albany Park]
