For decades, the University of Chicago has sponsored a sometimes raucous debate over which food is more worthy: the latke of Hanukkah or the hamantash of Purim. Academics gather for the annual November event, tongues in cheeks, to wrangle over the classic potato pancake and the filled pastry. Ruth Fredman Cernea has gathered the best of the arguments in the book, “The Great Latke-Hamantash Debate” (University of Chicago Press, $18). Esoteric yes, but a real hoot.
