First, I want to say that I am a loyal reader of RedEye.
I do have a slight problem, though, with the content of your “Boy on Boystown” feature, in particular the article that ran Dec. 15 titled “Want sex? Dress smart.”
In this article, Jason Steele regurgitates some of the most shallow and damaging stereotypes about gay men that I have read in awhile. His assertion that in order to enjoy a good sex life, one must wear the right sweaters and the proper underwear is the mind-set of a relatively small and sheep-like segment of the gay community.
Unfortunately, as gays and lesbians achieve greater acceptance in the mainstream community, it is always this easily digestible image of gay men as vain perfectionist clotheshorses that serves to misrepresent the gay community.
Some of us are 10 or more pounds overweight. Some of us don’t shop at Kenneth Cole. Some of us are (gasp) over 30. We are an amazingly diverse community of people who cannot be pigeonholed into one predictable way of thinking. I, personally, wear an old mechanic’s jacket and ratty shoes everywhere I go and I enjoy plenty of great sex. And there are many like me.
