In its Dec. 13 editorial “Justice up, justice down,” the Tribune became the propaganda voice of a group that is nothing more than a shell for the tort reform movement in America.
When the Tribune cited the American Tort Reform Association’s report that labeled Cook County as second place in the “judicial hellhole” rankings, the Tribune displayed an obeisance to this group that is totally funded by corporate America and whose stated goal is the elimination of the tort system to the benefit of its clientele, corporate America. The Tribune also maligned and vilified the judges of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Lawyers like us, both on the plaintiff’s side and the defense bar, are outraged at the Tribune’s inaccurate description that the judges we know and work with are biased, do not follow the law and, in essence, violate their oath to do justice.
All may not agree with every decision made by our judges, but our judges are, in fact, hardworking, knowledgeable, fair, just and do indeed follow the law.
The leadership and members of the Cook County judiciary have no reason to be embarrassed, as the Tribune suggests. The Tribune, on the other hand, should be embarrassed for a blatant display of biased and sophomoric reporting.
