A record-tying number of bears were killed in Anchorage during 2005, including more than a dozen black bears attracted by garbage, bird seed or other edibles people left outside.

Counting two black bears struck by vehicles, 21 bears were killed in Anchorage. That includes 15 black bears shot or captured near town plus two female brown bears that were shot after they charged hunters in Chugach State Park. Two cubs died also as a result.

The total ties with the 21 bears killed in 2000.
