With the memory of two disappointing losses in last week’s Pontiac Holiday Tournament still fresh, Grant Monroe’s hot shooting in Tuesday’s night’s 63-55 Mid-Suburban crossover victory at Hersey helped Schaumburg erase some of the bad taste.
“We really had to step it up after what happened down in Pontiac to prove to everybody and to ourselves that we could still play on a high level,” said Monroe, who scored his team’s first eight points en route to a team-high 22.
A 13-4 burst over six minutes swelled a 31-29 Schaumburg lead to 44-33 late in the third quarter, but that didn’t knock out the Huskies (9-5).
Sean Dwyer’s three-pointer with 52 seconds to go pulled Hersey within 57-55, but Schaumburg point guard Mike Kelly hit three of four from the line on the next two possessions to help seal the victory for the Saxons (9-3).
“We weren’t really producing very well on offense, and Grant stepped up and made some big shots,” said Schaumburg senior guard Jake Pancratz, who scored 12 points.
Schaumburg’s Drew Jackson added 10.
Dwyer scored a game-high 23 and Sean Bayless had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies, who own the top spot in the Mid-Suburban East.
