Whereas it is uncertain as to what caused the devastating fire at the Pilgrim Baptist Church (“Landmark church destroyed by fire,” Page 1, Jan. 7), it is not uncommon to lose a historic building due to the high-risk job of installing a hot rubber roof.

Is it required to have a fire-extinguishing device present during the installation? If not, perhaps it’s time to require this when obtaining a renovation permit, which would also cover the use of open flame for stripping paint or welding.

The loss of the church designed by Louis Sullivan should be a catalyst for this enactment.
