Would someone please explain to me why members of Congress are allowed to accept more than a $25 dinner from anyone for any reason? They receive good salaries, excellent health benefits and enviable retirement packages. If lobbyists have valid points and arguments, let them make them–in the form of a letter, a meeting in the politician’s office or over a $25 dinner.
If all but minimum gratuities are illegal, maybe our lawmakers would find time to listen, weigh alternatives and judge ideas on their merit. Wouldn’t that be a novel idea? And to those who say, “It’s always been done that way,” I say, “That is no reason it should continue.”
