Every day I hear people saying things such as “He’s the kind of person that likes . . . ” or “No one that I know ever thought … “

People around me say things such as that, as do people on the TV all day long.

I was brought up to believe that things are “that” while people are “who.”

Why can’t we talk about people whom we know being people who do such and such?
