Crude oil for March delivery fell $1.21 a barrel after an Energy Department report showed that supplies of gasoline and distillate fuel rose for a fourth straight week.

Shares of ConocoPhillips, the nation’s third-largest U.S. oil company, slid along with oil prices. The stock declined to $63.54 even though the company said fourth-quarter earnings jumped 51 percent, to $3.68 billion. The Standard & Poor’s 500 energy index lost 1.8 percent.

Sales of existing homes declined for a third straight month in December. The National Association of Realtors said sales totaled 6.60 million at an annualized rate, well below forecasts of 6.87 million.

A gauge of home-building stocks in Standard & Poor’s indexes dropped on the housing report. Toll Brothers Inc., the nation’s largest luxury builder, shed 59 cents, to $34.02. D.R. Horton Inc., the country’s biggest builder, fell 78 cents, to $37.20.

Guidant Corp. stock slipped to $75.19 after the bidding war to buy it ended with Boston Scientific Corp. the winner. Boston Scientific fell 46 cents, to $23.54.

Shares of Applebee’s International Inc. rose to $25.53. The casual restaurant chain reported a 6.3 percent increase in same-store sales for the four weeks that ended Sunday.
