Spirited appeal

So what if you were spurned by that short-skirted squad in high school? This adult cheerleading troupe embraces all–especially local charities–which is a good enough reason to show your colors in support of the Chicago Spirit Brigade Anniversary Party and Fundraiser. Give ’em a G, give ’em an O, and give ’em 10 bucks; in return, you’ll get an evening of drag acts, dancing, poetry, singing and more, plus open bar from 8 to 9:30 p.m. 8 p.m. Saturday. Hydrate, 3458 N. Halsted St. 773-975-9244.

It takes 2, you know

If you’re like us, you’ve been daydreaming about tango alfresco at sultry SummerDance–and lamenting the fact that the series is still several months away. Sigh. Don’t let your tail feathers wilt while you wait; shake ’em to Latin, salsa, swing, tango and ballroom at a Downtown Dance Party with the staff of Chicago Dance. All skill levels are welcome; no partner necessary (which means you could snare a fellow dancin’ V-Day date). 7 p.m. Friday. $10. Chicago Dance–River North, 415 W. Huron St. 312-337-9503.

Kitchen aid

Can’t stomach the thought of spending Valentine’s dinner shoehorned into a cramped table at an overcrowded eatery? Get a crash course in culinary how-to at a Pre-Valentine’s Day Cooking Class and you could dine a deux at home in your skivvies. Pay attention as Signature Room at the 95th exec chef Michael Pivoney leads a three-course demo, then take home his recipes and shopping lists to prep for the big day. 11 a.m. $55. Advance registration required. 875 N. Michigan Ave. 312-280-0458.

Warner brother

You were smitten by his dimples back in the day, but there’s more to Malcolm-Jamal Warner than a winning smile and a Huxtable history. This “Cosby” cutie’s also a musician and poet. Hear him live and, for an extra $10, attend a preshow reception where you can mingle with the man behind Theo. 6 p.m. reception; 7 p.m. show. $25-$35; proceeds benefit Chicago State University and McKay School. Breakey Theatre, Chicago State University, 9501 S. King Drive. 312-905-4177.

He’s good enough …

… he’s smart enough and, gosh darn it, you like him? For those who prefer a close encounter of the political kind, meet comedian and radio host Al Franken at the Boots and Jeans Fundraiser, benefiting Midwest Values PAC. Snack on appetizers and drinks (two included in admission) while Franken dishes on domestic policy. 7 p.m. Saturday. $50. City Saloon, 151 W. Ohio St. 312-527-3667.

Veg out

Your mama didn’t have to tell you twice to eat your broccoli; you’re tickled pink (er, green?) by an all-veggie diet. Share supper with like-minded folks (non-vegheads welcome too) at a Go Veggie! Dine Out meal. It’s a great chance to get a peek at revamped Cousin’s Incredible Vitality, which recently ditched its Turkish format for all-healthy eats. 5 p.m. Sunday. $14-$19. Advance registration required. 3038 W. Irving Park Rd. 773-871-7000.

Ridin’ the alley

You like Critical Mass in theory–every civic-minded citizen can get behind pedal-powered transport–but in practice, January’s awfully unpredictable for a multihour bike ride. We won’t blame you if you skip a step and join the Masses postcycle at the Bowlin’ Polka Ride afterparty, featuring live music from the Polkaholics. Riders convene at 5:30 p.m. Free. Daley Plaza, 55 W. Randolph St. 773-710-4143. Party starts at 8 p.m. No cover. Lincoln Square Lanes, 4874 N. Lincoln Ave. 773-561-8191.

Have a Vine time

Already borrowing against Monday’s paycheck? Don’t spend the weekend sulking at home; head where the drinks flow freely–for free. Chicago Vine hosts a wallet-friendly evening at Enclave, featuring complimentary cocktails from 9 to 10:30 p.m., and DJs Louie Loop and Splinter. 9 p.m. Friday. Free before 11 p.m. when you RSVP at chicagovine.com; $10 after. 213 W. Institute Pl. 312-654-0234.
