Stratus fractus clouds: A ragged, gray layer of low cloud, often less than 1,000 feet above the ground, and usually occurring during inclement winter weather; also called fractostratus. When Chicago’s Loop skyscrapers pierce the clouds, they are usually stratus fractus.
