Masterful writing

Steven Conn’s review of Karry Trask’s new book, “Black Hawk: The Battle for the Heart of America,” is itself a masterful piece of writing. Conn’s words–“War is a story we tell ourselves in order to make sense out of what is otherwise organized and semiorganized violence and murder. Creating that story involves giving the violence a larger meaning and denying that the enemy has any humanity”–are the kind of words we all need to understand before engaging in continual efforts to resolve our differences by going to war.

Thank you, Steven Conn, for a great piece of writing. This quote will help guide my thinking.

Perfect escape

I [am delighted] that the Books section has returned to its tabloid format. It is so much easier to tote around and read review by review when I am on the run.

While I read the broadsheet version, I was far less likely to slip it into my bag when headed out the door to take a bus or train. Now, I know exactly what I will be reading when riding around the city. It’s perfect for escaping, a few minutes at a time, from the din of the city commute.

I really like the new format for the Books section. It’s easier to read, and the crossword puzzle, one of my favorites, is much easier to work.

Thank heavens! You listened to your readers and came to your senses. The restored format and size of the Sunday Books section is delightful and a reminder that “everything old is new again.” What a treat.

Now if Federated would only decide to wake us up one morning with the headline: “Marshall Field’s Name Restored!”
