Beyonce has said she wants to graduate from the kind of roles she has done in the past. They weren’t that bad, were they?
“The Fighting Temptations” (2003)
Role: Lilly, a nightclub singer turned choir member.
Our review: When a scenery-chewer like Cuba Gooding Jr. is your leading man, you just have to stay out of his path. But B’s personality was M.I.A.
“Austin Powers in Goldmember” (2002)
Role: Foxxy Cleopatra, CIA agent and Austin’s love interest.
Our review: Laudable: Having to kiss Mike Myers. Laughable: Her delivery of corny lines such as “Well, the future better get ready for me. ‘Cause I’m Foxxy Cleopatra, and I’m a whole lotta woman!”
“Carmen: A Hip Hopera” (2001)
Role: Carmen, poisonous man-stealer and aficionado of red dresses.
Our review: MTV’s version of the classic tale had the potential for disaster, but Beyonce held her own in her first major dramatic role.
