Some say Otis Rush is the world’s best blues guitarist, and he’s certainly underrated compared to his cuddly contemporary Buddy Guy. But this document of a 1976 concert at Chicago’s beloved old Wise Fools Pub should give listeners pause, as it starts off with an emergency distress signal of high-pitched electric-guitar notes and builds from there. And when he’s on, watch out: Armed with four B.B. King covers, as well as Chuck Willis’ “Feel So Bad” and his own fiery and grooving title track, Rush teases the audience with cut-off solos between verses, then lets loose whenever the song gives him space. His singing is just as strong–a low, straightforward and conversational style, reminding everybody where Eric Clapton borrowed his voice.
