Outside landscaping isn’t top on the to-do list of most homeowners during winter. But minimum maintenance can help protect trees and shrubs from damage. According to tree doctor Rex Bastian of the Care of Trees, dormant pruning, done beginning in December and continuing through February when no leaves are on trees, allows arborists to quickly evaluate the tree’s structure. Also, because there are fewer insects during colder months, dormant pruning also can slow the spread of certain diseases, such as Dutch Elm and oak wilt.

Other winter tree care tips include:

– Mulch trees to help retain soil moisture. The dry summer was tough on trees. Mulching, even when the ground is frozen, can help trees from further stress.

– Wrap the base of young trees in a plastic guard, burlap or a plastic cloth. Remove the material at the beginning of spring.

– Occasionally water spruce, fir and pine trees or young trees. Water only when the soil is dry and not frozen.
