According to Workbench magazine, of those U.S. households that have workbenches:
71 percent use it for auto maintenance.
57 percent use it for potting flowers and plants or sharpening gardening tools.
50 percent use it for do-it-yourself, fix-it projects such as repairing a bicycle or glazing a window.
30 percent use it for home remodeling, such as building cabinetry for kitchens or baths.
Most workbenches (41 percent) are in the garage, followed by a separate outbuilding (31 percent) or a basement (29 percent).
According to Workbench readers, the five must-have add-ons to a workbench are:
– A woodworking vise.
– A machinist’s vise.
– Storage cabinet underneath for portable power tools.
– Hanging storage above for hand tools.
– Hold-down devices that secure a piece to the bench.
