Vernon “Art” Umphrey, age 94, Army Veteran of WWII Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, beloved husband of the late Lorraine, nee Perschau; loving father of Betty (late Jim) Kirby of Bella Vista, AR and the late Judy (Mark) Wells of Rowlett, TX; devoted grandfather of Melanie (Alfredo) Robles, Ken (Brenda) Wells and the late John J. Cataldo Jr.; great-grandfather of Emily and J.C. Robles and Anthony, Ashley and Brittany Wells; fond brother of Arthur S. (Mary) Umphrey, Mocina (Bob) Countryman, Nancy (Harvey) Van Cleave and Kathie (Jim) Chronister; uncle of many. Retired letter carrier U.S. Post Office (Clearing). 30 year volunteer at Hines VA Medical Library. Life member and past Commander of the Des Plaines Valley Post #6863 V.F.W., past Commander of the 3rd District V.F.W., photographer for the V.F.W. State of Illinois and 3rd District. Life member of NWALKAO High Pot #42 Military Order of the Cooties. Member of Chapter #577 Military Order of the Purple Heart. Member of Second Indian Head Division. Charter member and Elder of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church. Visitation Friday 2 to 9 p.m. at the Richard-Midway Funeral Home, 5749 Archer Av. (corner of Lorel). Funeral Services Saturday, lying in state at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 5550 S. Merrimac Ave., Chicago, IL from 9:30 a.m. until time of Service 10:30 a.m. Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery.
