The news release for John Rich’s debut solo album, recorded and shelved five years before he and songwriting partner Kenny Alphin hit it big and rich as Big & Rich, trumpets, “The world is finally ready for the groundbreaking solo recordings that paved (Big & Rich’s) way forward.” Translation: Now it might sell. The one bit of real musical magic here is the a cappella gospel rave-up “New Jerusalem.” Rich spends the rest of the disc out Tuesday mostly yearning for lovers absent or non-existent.
