Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I read with sadness about the passing of Marshall Goldberg, the great Pitt and Chicago Cardinals football player (Tribune, April 6).

About 20 years ago I walked into a deli on the Gold Coast. I saw an older man waiting in line wearing a Pitt cap. Having graduated Pitt myself in 1976, I turned to him and asked when he graduated. With a smile, he said, “Much earlier than you–1939.” I replied, “Wow, those were the Marshall Goldberg years!” Startled, he beamed like a little boy and said, “I’m Marshall Goldberg. You know about me?”

All I can say is that we both walked out of the deli having made each other’s day. It was nice meeting you, Mr. Goldberg.
