Errors by Ohio Infielders Give Chicagoans Opening to Cinch Victory In Second Inning and They Improve ItCentral Leaguers Use Best Twirlers in Effort to Make Good Showing Against MajorsAltrock Up to Old Tricks.
Dayton, O., April 10.[Special.]The Chicago White Sox defeated Dayton today by a score of 5 to 3, mainly because of a bunching of errors in the second inning. Outside of this inning Dayton held the crack visitors safe.
Johns, the reliable southpaw, was sent in to twirl against Fielder Jones’ bunch and allowed four hits in as many innings, struck out Isbell, and handed two passes to first. Pearson took up the work for the following four innings and practically duplicated Johns’ performance. He allowed the same number of hits, struck out two batters, and gave one pass.
Chicago played a fast game in the field, Rohe’s two errors and Sullivan’s passed ball being the only misplays.
Dayton started off fast, Smith lacing out a clean single. He did not know Altrock, however, and was caught off the bag by a snap throw. Austin followed with a two base drive which hugged the right foul line. Altrock steadied and forced Pickett and Thornton to bat little popup flies to Tannehill.
When the visitors took their turn in the second the fun commenced. Hemphill drew four bad ones. Manager Jones laid down a bunt and both batters were safe. Tannehill followed with a bunt and Johns hit him in the back in making the throw to first. With three on bases, Sullivan drove a long fly to right, scoring Hemphill. Altrock singled to center and Jones and Tannehill registered. O’Neill hit to Austin, who threw wildly, letting Altrock score the fourth and last run of the inning. O’Neill was caught off first and was run down and Isbell fouled out.
The visitors scored their last run in the sixth on a double by O’Neill and a single by Isbell.
