5 arrested in mass killings

Police arrested five people on murder charges Monday for one of Canada’s worst mass killings and said the deaths of eight men found on a farm were part of “an internal cleansing” of a motorcycle gang. Police said they made the arrests at a farmhouse about 6 miles from where the eight men were found shot to death in Shedden, Ontario.

India fire kills at least 45

A fire swept through tents at a trade fair Monday in Meerut, India, killing at least 45 people and injuring 160, police said. It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, though a local politician told a TV station that it may have started when plastic sheeting hanging over an air-conditioning unit caught fire.

Hamas: Scale back violence

The new Hamas-led Palestinian government is working to end a surge in violence, urging rival groups in the Gaza Strip to refrain from launching rockets at Israel without permission. Although the rocket attacks have not stopped and Hamas says it still supports violent resistance, its efforts seem to be an attempt to stabilize the situation.

IKEA thinking big in China

The largest IKEA after its Stockholm flagship is set to open Wednesday in Beijing, as the home furnishing giant aims to assist millions of new home owners. The store has 77 model living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms. Sales in China account for only 1 to 2 percent of IKEA’s worldwide total, but are expected to grow by 30 to 50 percent a year.

Now that phone bill is off the hook

Yahaya Wahab from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, said he nearly fainted when he got a $218 trillion phone bill–and that’s in U.S. dollars. Wahab has been ordered to pay within 10 days or face prosecution. A newspaper reported the bill was for a line that was supposed to be disconnected in January. Wahab says he can’t wait to face the phone company in court.
