1,000 flee as fires hit Fla.
Brush fires kept about 1,000 people from their homes Monday, and the heavy smoke shut down parts of Interstate 95 between Daytona Beach and Cape Canaveral. At least one home was destroyed and about 8,000 acres scorched by the fires that began Friday and flared up through the weekend, officials said. Two other homes were severely damaged, and about 20 were still threatened Monday afternoon.
Moussaoui changes mind
Convicted Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui says he lied on the witness stand about being involved in the plot and wants to withdraw his guilty plea because he now believes he can get a fair trial from an American jury. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema denied the request Monday, saying it was “too late.” Moussaoui said in an affidavit: “I was extremely surprised” by the life sentence.
Gunman kills police officer
A gunman opened fire Monday outside a Chantilly, Va., police station, killing one officer and wounding two others before he was shot and killed by police, authorities said.A female detective died at a hospital Monday after the shooting, said police Chief David Rorher, who did not identify the woman, a nine-year veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department.
A second officer was in serious condition. A third was treated for minor injuries.
Lesbians’ brains studied
Lesbians’ brains react differently to sex hormones than those of heterosexual women, new research shows. That’s in line with an earlier study showing gay men’s brain responses were different from straight men–though the difference for men was more pronounced than women. In both cases the findings add weight to the idea that homosexuality has a physical basis and is not learned behavior.
