As standardized closet systems have become more affordable and available at big box stores, homeowners have raised the closet bar on what’s considered a “must” for a bedroom closet.
If you’re looking to expand or customize your bedroom closet space, here are some planning tips from Evanston-based design-build firm Benvenuti and Stein Inc.:
– Opt for laminate shelving over wire, which can leave waffle marks on clothing and allow small items to slip through.
– Use adjustable shelving so you can adapt shelf and hanging rod heights if your needs change.
– Allow plenty of space for shoes, which tend to multiply when left by themselves. Covered storage is best to keep dust at bay.
– Belts, ties, scarves and purses all deserve space of their own, if you’ve got it.
– If your closet also will serve as a dressing area, install both incandescent and fluorescent lighting so you can see how your clothes will look in a variety of environments. Think about adding a bench, stool or chairs for putting on shoes, and add electrical outlets if needed for hair dryers or other appliances.
