Through the first two games of their opening-round series against the Montreal Canadiens, Swiss goalie Martin Gerber was more like Swiss cheese for the second-seeded Carolina Hurricanes.
With the Canes in danger of going down 0-3, Cam Ward came in relief and carried Carolina to the East finals.
But if there is a trait that all four of the surviving teams share, it’s depth–and that includes goaltending.
So there was Gerber on Friday in Game 4 of Carolina’s series with Buffalo–in relief of his reliever Ward–backstopping the Hurricanes to a 4-0 victory to even the best-of-seven series at 2-2.
The days of living and dying with the No. 1 goalie in the playoffs are over.
Carolina told Gerber to stay ready while Ward was carrying the load.
Friday, they were telling Ward the same thing.
