“If gays marry, churches could suffer” does nothing to enlighten me as to why I should oppose gay marriage. Yes some churches could suffer for their moral dissent of gay marriage. But might it also give rise to religious institutions that are welcoming to all people? Perhaps Douglas W. Kmiec could also consider that it’s not a “same-sex marriage campaign” but citizens asking for the same rights and benefits that are extended to men and women who marry.
