Officials say the Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s new 26-gate North Terminal will have a linear layout and will incorporate post-Sept. 11 security improvements. The $443 million terminal is scheduled for completion in 2008 to replace the Smith Terminal, which opened in 1957. Significant but hard-to-see security features will include more efficient equipment for screening luggage. Detroit Metro had 36.4 million passengers in 2005. The North Terminal is expected to handle about 6.5 million a year.
