A French bakery in Little Village was immediately closed down, and remained shuttered for nearly three days, last week after city sanitation inspectors found live mice, hundreds of mouse droppings and raw eggs being stored at an unsafe temperature.
Inspectors from the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation conducting a routine inspection Tuesday at Le Bon Bon Bakery, 2863 W. Cermak Rd., forced the bakery to close immediately, department spokesman Matt Smith said.
“There were numerous problems, including eggs’ being held at the very unsafe temperature of 80 degrees,” he said. “They not only had sightings of mice droppings, but actual live mice.”
Members of the Dumpster Task Force, which enforces health codes in Chicago, were startled to find a mouse scurry past them during the inspection, Smith said.
The bakery also had more than 450 mouse droppings on the main floor and rat droppings in the basement. Mice had gnawed into a 100 pound bag of flour and left behind fecal evidence, according to Smith. In addition, the bakery was cited for overflowing Dumpsters and an accumulation of debris.
The bakery reopened Friday afternoon, Smith said.
“It took them a while to get their act together, but we are happy to see they are doing so,” Smith said.
