Anti-cancer marinade

When firing up the grill, don’t forget to first marinate your meats, which can reduce by up to 99 percent the amount of cancer-causing heterocyclic amines (HCAs). HCAs arise when grilling red meat, poultry and fish and can raise your risk of cancer, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR).

The AICR offers detailed information about safe grilling as well as a good marinade recipe in its free brochure “The Facts About Grilling.” To get it, go to the Web site aicr.org and click on “publications” and then “brochures.”

Bullies are a pain

Bullies literally can make kids sick, notes a report in the June issue of Parenting magazine. Kids who are picked on may develop stomach pain, anxiety, fatigue and depression.

If your child complains of such problems and also wants to avoid going to school, gently ask him if anything is going on there to upset him. If so, meet with the principal or school counselor to get help with the problem. In addition, tell the child’s pediatrician so he can treat the illness as well as possibly recommend a therapist.
