I opened the Magazine and went through the pages until I came to Don Terry’s article on David Plowden (“Time traveler, May 7”). Wow! That photo looked just like North Dakota used to look! I was instantly transported back to my childhood and vacations taken “back home”: going to the grain elevators (scary stuff, after hearing tales of someone falling in and drowning in the grain, the grain blowing up ), adventures at the farms and land that went on forever, running through a sea of grass so tall you couldn’t see over it, the big reunion picnics at my cousin’s farm.

I also want to express my appreciation for Leah Eskin’s food column. It never fails to give me a warm feeling or a hearty laugh. I feel like I am there in the midst of her family, and that’s a very nice place to be.

IT IS WONDERFUL that someone is making an effort to record the past, the out-of-the-way things that made our country great. I especially enjoyed the photograph of the Scranton, Pa., train depot with passengers boarding the Phoebe Snow. As a child living in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., my mother and I often took trips on that train. I am so happy David Plowden didn’t wait for the “no pictures” decision of the stationmaster.
