“The John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection”

Warner Brothers, $79.98

Who’s in it: John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Natalie Wood

Recap: John Ford was one of the greatest American film directors, and John Wayne his most famous star. This eight-film, 10-disc set has several of their collaborations.

Best extra: Both “The Searchers” and “Stagecoach” are available in this set (and separately) as features-packed special editions.

Secrets revealed: The 1956 behind-the-scenes feature focusing on “The Searchers” shows how little–and how much–movie marketing has changed.

Feature to skip: Director Peter Bogdanovich’s commentary on “The Searchers” is OK, but an even more enthusiastic fan such as Martin Scorsese (who is interviewed elsewhere) should have been brought in instead.

Trivia: “Stagecoach” (1939) was John Wayne’s first film with John Ford, but Wayne’s 80th (!) film overall.

If you liked this, try: Any of the countless films that have referenced “The Searchers,” from “Star Wars” to “Kill Bill.”

“Neil Young: Heart of Gold”

Paramount, $29.99

Who’s in it: Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ben Keith

Recap: After a health scare, Neil Young and director Jonathan Demme organized this Nashville concert, which showcased then-new material from the “Prairie Wind” album as well as old classics.

Best extra: For old-school Neil Young fans, there’s the singer performing “The Needle and the Damage Done” on “The Johnny Cash Show” back in 1971.

Secrets revealed: “The Rehearsal Diaries,” narrated by Demme, documents the 10 days of planning leading up to and through the performance.

Feature to skip: “These Old Guitars” is a three-minute segment on Young’s guitar tech, talking about his axes of choice.

Trivia: The two concerts filmed for this movie took place just months after Neil Young’s father died and shortly after Young underwent brain surgery.

If you liked this, try: “Stop Making Sense,” Demme’s brilliant Talking Heads concert film.
