Columnist Garrison Keillor has a reputation for being a gentle man, with good Midwest values and common sense. Most people reading his June 7 column, however, regarding Republicans and President Bush, would have to conclude that, at this particular point in time, on political matters, he is a man filled with contempt and hatred for people not on his political side (“Note to Republicans: The party’s over; Ineptness has ruined the GOP,” Commentary).

Look at this list of his own words in just one piece:

“Ineptness”; “ruined”; “mud huts”; “incompetence”; “disaster”; “shambling galoot”; “as smart as most high school wrestling coaches”; “cultural Sturmbannfuhrers”; “wrong son, should’ve tried the smart one”; “lousy tippers”; “talk through their noses”; “produce a ninny”; “into the swamp”; “a president who seems to get smaller and dimmer”; “beyond pitiful”; “violently stupid”; “inept”; “rant”; “screech.”

After screeching and ranting for about 600 words, Keillor concludes by stating that Republicans “will rant, they will screech . . . but you have to do what you have to do.”

If Keillor wants to see someone beyond pitiful, he need only to look in a mirror.
