Although I don’t go as far as letter writer Kevin Quail does in his vitriol against “American Idol” (“What `Idol’ represents,” Voice of the people, June 4), I’ve often said the show would be more appropriately titled “American Idiot.” This is because of the lack of pride and self-esteem “contestants” display in putting up with the insults of the arrogant Simon Cowell and the inane swoons of Paula Abdul, as well as why so many viewers watch it.

That “singers” are willing to make fools of themselves is bad enough. That this “reality” show is so popular is more worrisome. What of value does this show represent?

Hype, phoniness, condescension and manipulation don’t fit my criteria of worth.

Oh wait! I’ve seen promos for another Simon Cowell soon-to-be hit, featuring Regis Philbin as the emcee.

Don’t think I’ll bother to check that one out either.

But why shouldn’t producers keep this tripe coming? People actually watch it. Sad. Embarrassing.
