Steve Wingard of Marquette, Mich., is on the latest leg of his bid to circumnavigate Lake Superior in a 17-foot red canvas and wood canoe. He began in 2003. Wingard plans to paddle from the Apostle Islands in northwestern Wisconsin to Duluth then to Canada along the Minnesota shoreline and back. He estimates it will take 40 to 50 days. Next summer he plans to finish with the 550-mile Canadian shoreline.
