We generally welcome efforts to dispel e-mail hoaxes about microwaving with plastics, but Julie Deardorff’s recent column (“Internet hoax on plastic does leak some truth,” Q, June 11) only adds to the confusion. Your readers should know that all plastics intended for food use–from food wrap and microwavable storage containers to baby bottles and commercial packaging–must meet stringent U.S. Food and Drug Administration safety standards before they are allowed on the market. It’s natural for consumers to want reliable information about products they rely on every day. Always check the product or packaging label and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use.
