Many have said that we should stop celebrating the mini-milestone known as 8th grade graduation because there are so many more educational milestones to celebrate in the future (“No pomp to cap end of 8th grade; Junior high graduation toned down after years of chasing the Joneses,” Page 1, June 8).
If this is true, should we skip celebrating birthdays? Anniversaries? Christmas?
The fact is, we need to encourage and celebrate more about our children’s education, not less. Graduating 8th grade is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Happy New Year? Why have this annual celebration when there will be another Jan. 1 next year?
