Dorothy Holton Bowes, 97, beloved wife of Kenyon Davis Bowes, died suddenly but peacefully in her home on June 4, 2006. She was a lifelong resident of Illinois and a resident of Evanston for 44 years. Mrs. Bowes met her husband when they were both students at the University of Illinois, and after being proposed to at the Kentucky Derby, married in 1924. Their marriage was an example of how to do things right, and they lived together in harmony, with dignity and warmth for one another for 72 years. In her early married years she traveled with her husband, a newly minted accountant with Arthur Anderson, and once settled down, taught science at local grade schools for many years. She was a terrific 1950’s stay-at-home Mom, and she provided her two children, Kenyon Davis Bowes Jr. and Cynthia Bowes, a rock solid steadiness and unconditional love that prevailed throughout the years. She was a gracious hostess and she will be missed by her friends, the “Holy Eight”. She traveled the world many times over, visiting Russia and China and her all-time favorite destination, the Trevi Fountain in Rome. She loved Lily of the Valley flowers, dark chocolate, Fox News, fishing and she dearly loved her grandchildren, Deborah Evrard, Kenyon “Kip” Davis Bowes III, Christopher Bowes, Perry Loiselle, Joshua Bowes, Matthew Bowes and Natalya Nekipelova. She was also the great-grandmother of six. Mrs. Bowes was a longtime member and Treasurer of Women’s Board of Seabury Western Theological Seminary and a member of Northwestern University Settlement, North End Mother’s Club, Northwestern University Guild and Midwest Antique Club. “Mrs. Zip”, as she was often referred to, was a perpetually youthful and dynamic presence in all our lives, and she leaves a void that is sorely felt and cannot be replaced. She set the standard for how to live, and her example remains with us now. We will always love her. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hilmer Johnson and her family for their wonderful care. A Memorial Service has been held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Evanston, IL.
