BAHAMAS
Malaria does not normally occur in the Bahamas, but at least 16 cases have been reported on Great Exuma Cay. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends that all travelers to the island take chloroquine to prevent infection, and protect themselves against mosquito bites. The outbreak has not spread beyond Great Exuma.
CHINA
The U.S. Embassy in Beijing retracted its warning of June 9 regarding the threat of possible terrorist actions against American interests in China.
MEXICO
Striking teachers who occupied the main square in Oaxaca since mid-May but were forcibly cleared out by police June 14 have vowed to protest again.
PHILIPPINES
The U.S. State Department updated its travel warning for the Philippines stating that “terrorist groups and radical insurgents continue to plan multiple attacks” throughout the country. Mindanao island and the Sulu Archipelago are the areas of greatest risk.
SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka appears again to be on the brink of civil war. Tamil Tiger rebels detonated land mines around a crowded bus June 15, killing 64 civilians. What appeared to be reprisal killings of Tamil civilians followed, apparently at the hands of the Sri Lankan armed forces. Travel to the north and northeast should be avoided.
