Helen Shaw Wolfes. Born in St. Louis, Helen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Illinois, Urbana. An accomplished artist, she taught art at the grade school, junior high, and college levels in Champaign, Lincolnwood and Skokie School districts until her retirement. She inspired the artist Allen Stringfellow as his first art teacher in Champaign. Helen was prominent in politics and led Northfield Township Republican Women’s Club for many years. She was also a board member of the 10th Congressional District. Helen succeeded Mrs. J.L. Kraft as teacher of Philathea Women’s Bible class at North Shore Baptist Church. She was married to Oscar “Ozzie” Wolfes for 67 years, until his passing last September. At their 50th wedding anniversary they had over 200 of their closest friends share in celebrating a very special union. Helen will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, teacher and friend. Those who knew her will miss her every day until they join her. Today the angels are happy and the mortals are sad. Beloved mother of Gregg Warren Wolfes and Gayla (Robert) Cox; loving aunt of Susan, David, Sara, Paula and Pamela; adored by many Fox cousins.
