Plenty of juicy movie gossip slips through the cracks, mostly because it’s hard to know which reports and Web sites to trust. But we’re still a little angry at ourselves for missing a true gem of a casting rumor last week: Matt Damon as Capt. James T. Kirk.
According to the rumors, “Mission: Impossible III” director J.J. Abrams (who reportedly will oversee a “Star Trek” prequel) is interested in having Damon play the famed captain of the starship Enterprise. Other rumors even had William Shatner–the original Captain Kirk–giving Abrams his blessing to pursue Damon.
That’s gold! How did we miss this? To make up for it, RedEye will boldly go where probably a few people have gone before and offer our casting suggestions for the new “Star Trek” movie.

Book buzz
Let’s not talk about sex, Jennifer Lopez’s lawyer says in a new court filing.
J.Lo is trying to stop ex-husband Ojani Noa from releasing a tell-all book that she is afraid will spill lurid details about their personal life, E! Online reports, citing court papers obtained Tuesday by L.A.’s City News Service.
Lopez’s lawyers claim in the papers that Noa plans to describe what he calls their first sexual encounter. (Noa and Lopez married in 1997 and divorced a little more than a year later.)
Lopez’s legal team filed for an injunction against Noa’s potential book in April. Her attorney, Paul Sorrell, will argue for the injunction in court on Friday, E! reports.
“Sadly, no personal detail is too sacred to be sold by Noa for profit,” the papers state. Neither Noa nor his attorney was contacted to comment.
Whoa, Nelly!
It bears repeating: Sex sells. On the strength of her sizzling song “Promiscuous,” Nelly Furtado’s new album, “Loose,” sold 219,000 copies in its debut week to finish at No. 1 on the album chart, billboard.com reports. Christian rock group Underoath’s “Define the Great Line” placed No. 2.
Holding court
DMX (above) failed to show up in court Wednesday in White Plains, N.Y., to face a bevy of bad-driving charges, and a judge who had granted him two postponements said she had had enough. City Court Judge Barbara Leak issued an arrest warrant for DMX, saying: “We have granted him a number of courtesies. It ends now.”
Hassel-mania
He’s a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” he’s Adam Sandler’s slimy boss in “Click” and he cried–like a man–on “American Idol.” He’s David Hasselhoff, and he’s on fire right now. “I feel like it’s great timing to have a No. 1 TV show and a No. 1 movie in the same week,” he told USA Today. The ex- “Baywatch” star’s mother died this year, and he’s going through a nasty divorce, but he said “it all seems to be turning around.”
